However, like me, you may not be too keen on a poodle as a pet, so you could try a labradoodle. yes, it's a poodle crossed with a labrador. It may sound bizarre, but they are fabulous dogs. you get all the best bits of both breeds, and they are very good for people with allergies. A friend owns a couple and they are brilliant pets. Google labradoodle and prepare to want one........(we're getting one soon I hope!)
According to my pal, it depends on what type of coat you get on your dog. Some are curly, just like a poodle, some are flat coated, just like a lab, but then my favourites are the 'scruffys' which are somewhere in between. But generally they take very little grooming. Not sure if they're available in UK, but an Australian breeder does labradoodles that do not shed hair, and so are absolutely perfect for a) very tidy people (!) or, more commonly, b) those with bad allergies. My pals dogs are just great, they are ideal pets and good with children, cats etc. The only thing he recommends is puppy/dog obedience classes, cos they can be quite wilful dogs and so you need to get them off on the right foot (so to speak). Pals second puppy was a creamy/white female and she looked like a wee baby polar bear....too fab for words!
I am also allergic to dogs but found out about Bedlington terriers and now have one! They are good as they have hair as opposed to fur and don`t moult. They are not highly scented like some dogs and I`ve been okay apart from hives if she licks my face/ neck. ( which I avoid!) I usually get an attack of sneezing and asthma with a lot of dogs but not with her. I suggest you try and find some one with a Beddie and see how you go before you take the plunge. PS Beddies do not have to have that AWFUL poncy trim and make wonderful affectionate pals. (sorry I know you were discussing Westies.....)
