Please go to a reputable pet shop and chat to them about snakes first... they start off like 6" long and end up about 10 ft long ............ and 6" wide.... They are not cutey or cuddly pets by any stretch of the imagination. Imagine the food requirements too - rats and mice are the order of the day for snakes....
A friend of mine has a large snake and she has to breed rats just to feed the darn critter ! I no longer visit her (the size of her python makes me a scaredy visitor)...

It is rather difficult to find a suitable leash to take them out for a walk.
If you stick to the smaller garden/grass snakes they should be as easy to look after as a frog or lizard. As has been said above; find out the likely size your reptile will grow to. Most snakes will keep growing all their lives but the older that they get, the slower they grow so get a young one if you can.
