In medieval times, in a jousting tournament between knights, after the loser was thrown from his horse, there was normally his dog to protect him from any more injury. What was the breed of dog ? Thank you.

I think you could be right about the Mastiff , as that breed was about at that time, and the hounds ,I think, were a later breed. Thank you very much.
