hi kleiber have you any tips on making life easier for a 3 legged cat issy was hurt saturday and has had her leg amputated this evening so any advice would be most welcome thanks RUTH

No advice, but my nephews' cat (fluff) lost a leg after being caught in a snare when he was about 18m old he is now 10 and as active as any cat that age, so once she's got over the operation there's nothing to prevent her having a long and normal lfe

no have not seen the vet since saturday only spoken on the phone to her and was in a state of shock when i spoke to her at 7.15 this evening when she phoned me to tell me that the op was finished and all had gone ok will ask her when i pick issy up but i was not thinking straight when i spoke to her earlier .it has all had a chance to sink in now so thought i would ask kleiber as she has been through this. it was decided not to try and repair her leg as it was not a clean break and there were a lot of fragments also her age as she is 10 she wont heal as easily i dont think she will have to many problems once its all healed as she managed to jump the wall get through the cat flap and into her box on saturday morning all with a smashed face and broken leg bless her

Some years ago my neighbour had a 19 yr old cat who broke her front leg, the vet said that it couldn't be repaired and amputated it, the cat was home within 5 days and was running up and down stairs quite happily, she lived till she was 22 and died of old age, cats and dogs adapt very well with only 3 legs so I shouldn't worry too much, you'll be surprised how quickly they get over it.

Ditto what has been said, my friend's cat was caught in a trap last year, after a few days kept indoors she was back out in the fields catching rabbits and mice. She can run as fast as ever and jumps like a stag onto the roof of the barn and back down.

Sorry, meant to say hope she is insured or you have a bit put by in the 'kitty' (sorry about that) because my friend's vet bill was over �800!

Although the cat recovered, the neighbour who was responsible for setting the illegal trap is still smarting from the effects of my friends dad 'insisting' he paid the vet bill.

hi all she is quite bright this morning still not eating due to ulcers where the injuries are in her mouth they are going to try syringing some food into her this afternoon if she will take it she might be allowed to come home this evening .mrs chappie i think she must have got hit by a car she is avery nervous little cat so dont think anyone could have got close enough to her to have hurt her with a kick or anything like that .no lankeela she is not insured at one stage we had 12 cats so to insure that lot would have cost .a fortune i have got �600 to a �1000 as a bill in my head .we are having a real good month 2 aunts died last week, issy got hurt,and my husband is being layed off from work today

Hi ruthann - I do hope things change for the better for you soon, you are having a rough time of it.
Hope Issy recovers quickly - I regularly look after a 21 year old 3 legged cat who gets around wonderfully well, bless her. I can't give any advice but you will probably need to be guided by her as she will soon work out what she can and can't do. I will wish you good luck

hi all issy is home picked her up at tea time she has been on my lap all evening purring like an engine she had a little bit to eat then dashed though the cat flap into the back porch to have a wee in the tray she wanted to go outside but that wont be allowed for a while her face doesnt look too bad a bit lopsided and one side of her mouth doesnt shut all the way but hopefully as the swelling goes down it will sort its self out .Lankeela �347 so no where as bad as i was expecting thanks everyone Ruthxx

Hi Ruthann.

How are you and Issy feeling today? Hope you are both well.
I am taking my sister to a rescue centre tomorrow, she is going to resuce an ex racing greyhound. She already has a 4 year old bitch called Storm, who she has had for approximately 6 months, she's gorgeous.
I am still feeling quite down about Rocky, i know it will get easier but i don't think i'll ever get over losing him.
I just miss the cuddles. Shep will let you stroke and brush him but that's it. He isn't a cuddly type of dog.
Anyway that's all to report, just wanted to check everything was okay with you.

Hi, ruthann - sorry, I haven't been on AB for a while & just picked up your thread. I'm so sorry to hear about Issy! How old is she?
Cats generally adapt quite well - I suppose a lot depends on which leg she's had to have amputated. I think it's probably better if it's a back leg, as they can still jump and hang on with their front legs. My little Mischa has had he right front leg amputated, but it doesn't seem to bother her ( mind you, she's just a kitten, so will grow up like that) What worries me, is that she won't be able to climb a tree if she's chased by a dog or something. Even if Issy's not very young, she'll be fine, I'm sure - you just have to help her initially, to get up on things (your best sofa!!), but she'll get used to it. Love to you both, K xxx

hi kleiber thanks for your reply issy is ten she is lots better today has had 3 lots of food ,today is the first day she has wanted to eat, hers is her left front she seems to be managing quite well already we went for check up last night and the vet is really pleased with her got to go back next thursday to have the staples removed at least 21 my son counted, how is mischa bet she is growing fast now

I'm glad to hear Issy's doing well! She'll soon adapt, I'm sure - if she's anything like Mischa, only having 3 legs won't hold her back - once she gets used to it. Misch still forgets sometimes & falls over, but otherwise she's brilliant!! K x
