HELP, my kittens are eating soooo much
12 Answers
i have a 6 month old kitten and a 4 month old kitten, i am feeding them felix for kittens and also give them sum whiskas dry food aswell. the problem is the kittens are eating 7 pouches a day between them which means a whole box which is about 4 does not even last 2 days.
i dont really want to feed them just dry food because i no its not as good for them. i was wondering if giving them adult cat food may fill them up i bit more but is that ok for such young kittens. or is really cheap cat food ok for them
any ideas welcome thanks

The whiskas one is very good as is IAMS.
I used IAMS which is the more expensive brand but most of the brand name ones are good.Kittens do have a way of making you feel guilty don't they?lol
You could buy some of the whiskas treats for them if you want to spoil them occasionally but be strict about how much you give them of that as they are quite fattening.

7's quite alot of pouches!!!
My 2 are coming up to a year and share 1 pouch a day and the rest of the time they have the dry stuff! I have to admit that my 2 follow me into the kitchen as they associate that with food and know I also keep treats in there but they don't always get it as they'll they'll be the size of the house by now!!
My vet told me that dry food is better for their teeth in the long run but I still give them half a pouch each in the evenings as they are carnivores by nature!
As for food, don't get me started as they're such fussy eaters!! They're actually on Sheba Gourmet pouches and anything by Purina for the dry stuff, I forget what's it's called as that always seem to change too depending on their mood!!

thanks for all your answers i though 7 pouches between them was rather alot.
but i did notice on the bottom of tha pack that there is a feeding guide for kittens and its sais i am feeding them the right amount, each kitten of there age should be having up to 4 pouches a day each at 2-3 meals a day!!!!!!! i couldnt belive it when i read it but they would say that wouldnt they to get more money from you.
lots of people have told me different things some people say jus feed them once a day some say kittens need 4 meals a day. im so confused .
the kittens are happy with the amount i feed them and they dont look over weight YET infact the new one looks very under weight but i just cant afford the amount im giving them.

I'd say the feeding should be about:
3-5 Months: 5 to 4 meals daily
6-8 Months: 3 to 4 meals daily
9-12 Months: 3 meals daily
So I'd say it's probably about right providing their are kitten sized meal pouches of kitten food.
After 12 months, twice a day is enough and they can switch to adult cat food.
Kittens need nutrition to grow and be healthy in their first year, hence the different feeding requirements.
Dry food is OK if it is a balanced food for all their nutritional requirements, not just biscuits made for a top up.
Places like Aldi and supermarkets tend to do cheaper own brand pouches, Asda ones are pretty good.
Mine is 2 and has a mixture of pouches and biscuits.

My kitten is 13 weeks and I mainly give her Science Diet dry food with some pouches and kitten milk (and water obviously). She eats a bit less than the recommended amount of dry food with a bit of milk and probably about half a pouch a day - she is however not a big kitten.
I think that the dry foods, even the expensive ones actually work out quite economical. The bag of science diet i bought was about 20, but I have had it for a month and she is probably only about half way through it - if you use the measuring cup, you find that she doesn't really need that much based on her weight (my kitten is now 1.3 kilos - she was 0.7kilos at 7 weeks, so she is growing!)
The food must be doing her good, she is certaily full of mischief and energy and has a beautiful shiny soft coat.

When I got my cat as a kitten he was already on adult food. My cat is fed twice a day and always has biscuits available.
I would never buy my cat a really cheap cat food, don't know why, it is probably all the same stuff.
There never seems to be a lot in those pouches. I think you should try them on adult food. 6 cans of felix is about 3.00, just give them about 1/4 can each twice a day, food should last a lot longer then!

Have they been wormed recently???? I cant believe they are eating that much and looking underweight! Get them wormed!!! Kittens are notorious for having worms - contracted from the mother.
ALso - vets these days say as long as there is plenty of fresh water - dry food is better than wet for cats. helps to look after their teeth too! Dont give them cheap food.... get it from a pet shop if you can afford it... they fill cheap food with muck... and it doesn't bode well for a long life in an animal!!

yeah i do worm them, the first kitten i bought is a couple of months older and she is lookin very well its just the younger kitten that looks a bit under weight, shes also the kitten that eats more.
i didnt really want to get them really cheap food thats why i asked if any one does and if there cats have been ok on it but i know if im buyin the expensive brand (felix) it would be alot better for them.
i cant belive that they eat that much either but as i said it is only the kitten pouches that im feeding them and the feeding guide on the box sais that they are getting the right amount.
hopefully when i move them on to the adult food they eat alot less lol
thanks for all your help everyone

my kittens are 6 month and for the last 3 months have been on adult food. I had other cats and when i fed them all the kittens wouldnt eat the kitten food but wanted the adult food instead. I feed them purena one, it is expensive but there's no waste and do'nt have a problem with flies when its warm. My vet said it's ok to feed adult food to them and probably better for them. Years ago we didnt have kitten food they all ate the same, didnt harm them.
