I have maggots in my house . Ikilled about twenty of them this morning on the ceiling only to find them agin this evening What and how do I kill these things immediately?
I'm a bit confused about them being on the ceiling. All the obvious types of maggot I can think of would fall off and land on the floor...
Could you describe them in more detail please?
It would seem that it is very unlikely that these things are maggots. Without knowing more it is very difficult to assess where they are coming from, A good pyrethroid based incecticide should kill them.
If it is maggots then they are feeding on something and you need to extermine the source that is keeping them alive. Other than that, I guess you could chuck boiling water on them.
mag, where do you live? This may give a clue as to what these critters are?
New Forester..Just had a look on Google and came across info on Glow-worms. Their larvae hangs from ceilings or so it says.. is this a possiblility? But as you say without more details it difficult to say.
I wonder if they might be caterpillars of what I think is called carpet moth?
These hide in a little silk bag, and look like rather long grains of animated rice. They graze on the carpet under the furniture, then when mature they may crawl up the wall to pupate. They could easily end up on the ceiling. Often behind pictures or curtains too.
The solution is simple -- vacuum under and behind everything all the time! Can't be bothered myself, so I just pick them off the wall when I see them...
The moths are little brown scuttly things with long whip-like feelers -- unlike clothes moth, which is the one with the white head.
Must admit I didn't know there was a difference New Forester, but thankfully I've never seen caterpillars in the house, specially on the ceiling.. now I shall be vigilant and go mad with the hovering...next time I have chance to get it out!!!
Not likely to be glow-worms, not in UK anyway. They are beetles living in rough grass, especially on downland and heathland. They eat snails, and are usually seen in warm summer weather.
They don't come indoors, in Britain, though I have seen them indoors (glowing under the bedsheet!) in Majorca.
There are other firefly and glow-worm species elsewhere, and I don't know what they do.
Lindy -- any time the urge for vacuuming comes on, let me know and you can drop round...
But we don't know if mag is in the UK..
So I may still be right!! Well I've gotta try haven't I New Forester!
PS. I let you know about the hoovering urges...!!!
