pimples

I have a 6 year old neutered very nervous tom and he has developed what feels like pimples on his flanks. The young vet was puzzled and recommended anti hairball biscuits? I have tried to comb them out but I dont want to hurt him as they are quite tough,any suggestions?

are you saying these are knots in his fur or pimples on his skin

cant quite see what good anti hairball biscuits are going to do ,do you think this could be an allergy to somthing he lays in, have you deflead him, does he go outside, have you changed your washing powder.

I have examined him for fleas as even the vet has , He has a very glossy coat , loves tuna and Iams biscuits and is very active.
The only thing that is different is that he is a very very nervous cat. jumps at the slightest noise , wants to be covered over with one of my old coats when he wants a nap and runs away if he sees a mouse. do you think this is giving him the cat equivalant of a human nervous rash?.
