will these cats get on

following on from some questions i have already asked this weekend.... we are introducing a 9 month un-nuetered kitten to the resident 14 year old neutered male. they have seen each other thru a glass door and had a good old sniff round the rooms when we swap the rooms over. at feeding time we have had fed the young un-neutered tom in a cage, with the resident tom feeding approx 2 feet away. neither seemed too bothered. they have put their noses together thru the cage without a hiss or a growl. i have a really good feeling about all this. what i want to know is about any similar situations and outcomes you might have had. we are on day 3 at the moment.

Cats can be very odd - sometimes they will get on and at others they will fight like mad. The older cat will want to exert his authority so expect some hissing and clawing at times. This should settle down as they get used to each other (I take it you will get the young cat neutered or he will spray to try to mark territory). I wouldn't leave them alone in a confined space - each will need an escape route. And feed them from separate bowls apart from each other. I have found that neutered toms often get on better than she-cats do with other cats so they are likely to be good friends eventually

My two are bother and sister from the same litter. I thought that this meant that they would be loving and sleep all cuddled up and be cute.

Nah - they either fight (or maybe play fight I can't be sure) or ignore each other.

Frankie eats most of the food and Princess Merlin pretends isn't bothered. But every so often my little Princess takes a really mean swipe at her brother and Frankie ends up few claw holes in his face.

They are really very odd animals.

As bensmum and wolf say its a bit unpredictable. Just ensure you are around to distract them if necessary. I'm afraid you will just have to give it a go , they will sort themselves out, just be around to diffuse any serious squabbles. Good luck.

my only experience of introducing cats has been very, very bad so im very nervous about this. i have had the resident cat for 14 years and he has been my most loyal companion and i love him like ...... well i cant put it into words! we will be getting the young tom neutered this week and they both have separate food, water and litter for now. im taking great pains to ensure they dont get face-to-face without barriers too soon i guess i want some assurance that it will be ok, and the signs look good.

Good luck!!! sounds like its all going well so far too! We intriduced 2 kittens (12 weeks old) to a male aged 13 or so. He hissed at them both and batted them round the head the first time. They both realised that meant he was boss and from that day on they all adored each other!!! It was so lovely living in a house with 3 cats who all liked each other.
I realise this may be rare but how you introduce them helps loads. Ignore the newcomer when the other one is around and make loads of fuss of the old one.
