dog pees on carpet
my dog wakes me up at about 3-4 in the morning whining to go outside. I get up and let her go outside. She goes pee outside. When i come back inside with her. I discover that every once in awhile she has already peed in the house. in the same spot everytime. Why does she do this? I know not to use ammonia based cleaning products, and praise her when she does go outside. Any suggestions?

Yes it is cruel and rubbing a nose in some pee that a dog has done hours earlier, only serves to confuse the animal. By all means raise your voice and say 'no' if you catch her peeing and then remove her straight outside. The idea of giving her a treat when she goes outside is excellent.
I ask how old she is because this could have a lot of bearing on the situation.
Agreed druiaghtagh, on both the cruelty and the fact about older dogs. That's why I enquired about her age. Also the vet told me that bitches often take quite a long time to get full bladder control, up to about 18 months sometimes. So if amber's dog is young she probably needs more visits out during the night.
Here is the answer I posted to a similar question not long ago. I am assuming you are talking about a puppy:
I crate-trained my pup. It worked great. Go here to see what its all about:

Like Marvin, I have to respectfully disagree with Octavius (about rubbing the dog's nose in it). Dogs are creatures of habit and learn through praise and repeated behavior. I heard a story about someone rubbing his dog's nose in the yuck and sending the dog outside. The dog learned the routine. He would do his deed in the house, rub his nose in it, then run to the back door. I'm not sure if its true, but I think it is believable.
When my dog forgot where to pee and started to squat in the house, a loud "NO" would stop her instantly. I would then go to the door and she would follow.
The real trick is to take the dog outside very frequently before he decides to pee in the house. This will give him the opportunity to pee in the right place. Then you will have the opportunity to give him tons of praise. He will quickly learn that peeing outside is a good thing.
Good luck!
Amber, I would guess it's old age. She is an old now and needs to wee more often. Not exactly incontinence. During the night she is probably half asleep when she goes indoors, or perhaps she cannot wake you sometimes. I am afraid you might have to start letting her out once or twice during the night (or even more). This is a very natural thing to happen with elderly bitches. She will not be doing it intentionally, so don't scold her She may well become incontinent at some stage.
She will pee in the same spot. As Ursula says she sees it as an emergency loo - bless her.
