There is just no need to hunt at all - why would someone get pleasure from killing or seeing something killed
Because it's always been done.
and to control the species population

The last two answers are two of the usual reasons given and are just not viable.
This as well:

Most rural dwellers are completely anti hunting and blood sports. Don't let the Countryside Alliance fool you, then represent very, very few.
why are they not viable?
You could just print one on your pc? but really, this is such old hat its getting a bit boring now, been there and got the tea shirt :)
Fox hunting does nothing to control the fox population. It is basically a 'jolly' for a certain breed of people. It is outdated and should remain banned. Perhaps the Conservatives might also like to consider bringing back bear bating, witch burning, etc.
of course it controls the population, although not many foxes are caught they are scattered and do not get a chance to rear cubs
Fox hunting has not been banned!! it has been banned to hunt fox with dogs, they are still being shot every night of the week in big numbers.

Nicely said Lofty! Just because something has always been done doesn't mean it should continue! We used to send kids up chimneys but we don't now! And why do so many hunts actually breed foxes to let go and then recapture them? A large number of the farming community are also against fox hunting - apart from the inherent cruelty in chasing an animal and then ripping it apart - land gets ruined!
Do you need people dressed up in fancy dress trampling over everything in the countryside, blocking roads, dogs running everywhere, and blowing horns to scatter a few foxes then! It's done for a sport, nothing more. Ask most farmers! A lot of the hunt people come up from the cities anyway.

By the way, I live bang in the middle of an estate that was famous for its hunts.
bear baiting? absolutely nothing to do with hunting
Don't be silly steg - half the fox hunters manage woodland to make sure there's suitable habitat for dens and next years sport.

Foxes can be a complete pest (I keep chickens they're not my friends) but call in rent-o-kill and they don't ride in on horses dressed up in fancy dress, blowing horns!
I see nothing wrong with culling foxes Ratter by humane means. As you say many are shot on a regular basis.
What about hunting for food. A pub near me has a warning....may contain bullets.
I used bear bating of something that is barbaric and long gone. Hunting foxes with dogs for pleasure is barbaric.

Jake is so right.
i could not care if it is done for sport or not, it controls the foxes, that is why hundreds are being shot now, they are able to breed and raise cubs without being disturbed
