I want a hamster

I rerly want a hamster but i dont know anyhting about them what do they need to have other than a cage and water and food because i have no idea can you please help

A wheel is good for exercise and plenty of bedding.

You will also need a wheel or ball for exercise and toys to keep them amused while shut in their cage. Hamsters are nocturnal so be prepared that most of the time you are awake he will be asleep! They can also nip so need gentle handling from a young age and some will remain nippers anyway.

Bethany, why do you want one if you don't know anything about them. They need looking after, and the occasional vet visit. Are you quite a young person?

well i holded one before and they look ever so cute and after that it has made me want one i was onli askin adive if i was to get one and how much it is carm down!!

Remember they don't live long and their bite is very painful as their teeth are as sharp as pins.

perhs best to babysit your friends one first then. you could also ask you friend abou what you need etc

Look after your friends hamster and see how you get on with it. Maybe she may have some advice.

They are cute and cuddly, but they do need a lot of exercise (which is why you get the wheel) and they need cleaning out a fair bit. You will need a supply of straw and shredded paper for their bedding.

If you do get one, get a siberian - the normal larger sized one, and handle it on a daily basis so it becomes tamer and will be a lot friendlier. Don't get one of the dwarf varieties if you've never had a hamster before - they are very cute, but they are also extremely fast and not nearly as easy to tame. Your pet shop may do starter packs that'll give you all the basics - otherwise, talk to the pet shop staff and they'll show you everything you need. But be prepared to part with the best part of £50 if you need to start from scratch.

Hi Bethany. If you live in a relatively large town/city ask at the library/community centre if there is a hamster club not too far away. You will be welcome to visit a club meeting, I'm sure, and you'll learn more actually talking to people about a shared interest. You might also make some new friends, all who like hamsters ☺
