Out of interest zzxxee, why are you asking? Just that I'd be interested too, not so much in the pure bred banned dogs but the "pit bull" type, maybe crossed with staffie and god knows what else, that the owners encourage to fight down my local dog walking field... grrrr....
The Fila Brasileiro is so...er..protective that the breed standard, no less, has a note telling judges not to touch it when judging it in shows! Sounds just the dog ! You can see the owners now saying, in all seriousness, "He's ever so good with the family.".
don't forget that as far as the law goes "type" is enough ie what the dog looks like and how it behaves, it doesn't have to be a purebred specimen to be banned.....poor dogs, bred to fight and be aggressive.
Of the banned breeds two if not three are not seen in this country anyway and the actual purebred pitbulls are very few and far between, most being crosses.
I agree, an aquaintance had a pure breed american pit bull called Cleo...she was a total sweetie... and such an idiot she used to try to follow the cat through the catflap... she was extremely well trained and knew her place in her human pack... I believe her owner was able to convince a court she was safe as she was a rather old lady last I saw of her...sadly muzzled as required
The problem is Rowan, nearly every pit bull or any other breed that ever attacked a child, the owners are all really shocked as they were such sweet family pets before the attack.
just looking at that link, under where it says 'judging whether your dog is a banned type', it says 'You can give up ownership of your dog but you cannot be forced to. If you do, your dog could be destroyed without you even going to court', am i reading this wrong or is that just plain cruelty!?!
I know one of the problems is unpredictability but on that basis I'd add rotties to the list...knew a guy who did canine security he liked them because they don't give a warning..before taking your arm off.
if you are saying that unpredictability is an issue then add badly bred badly reared dogs and cats and children of all ages and descriptions to the list.
