Anyone heard one this year? there is apparently a decline in numbers. They were always part of the summer when I was a child, but I haven't heard one for years.

I haven't so far as i know, but we have lots of lovely birds that sit in the trees outside, and sing to their hearts content. What amazed me, not having seen one, was how big cuckoos are, having now seen one on springwatch.

em, I know what you mean - until I came to live at the seaside, I had no idea how HUGE seagulls are, either!
relatives live on the coast, and everytime im there the gulls just seem to get bigger and bigger, they also go in the garden and being scavangers pinch whatever they can find, that includes digging into the black bags left out for rubbish collection.
I love birdsong, especially if awake early, which is usual these days. No noise apart from their trilling. More than one sits on the top of the roof aerials and i could listen all day if i had the time.

The only bird that ever annoyed me was the pigeon which used to sit on our roof and coo down the chimney,,,, ;-)
Not seen a Cuckoo for a few Years, their numbers are decreasing.
Lazy Bird, does not build a Nest, just lays a solitary Egg in other Birds nest instead which is bad news for the victim.
We,re the same boxy.Mrs dg so looks forward to hearing one,but although we live in the country,we have not heard one this year so far.
As you say,its song used to be one of the sounds of summer.
We used to hear them each summer but I haven't heard one for 3 or 4 years now. It was a sound of summer - however, like em, there are many lovely birds here singing their hearts out (at just after 4 in the morning lately, bless them!)
Awwww im not an avid bird lover or anything but i adore cuckoo's are they really on the decline? that is such a shame.
Heard my first one around the edn of April and the odd one every week since. I haven't actually seen one for years which is a pity, when I was a kid they seemed to be every where
There was a discussion about the Cuckoos on Springwatch tonight, they are trying to find out where they go after leaving our shores. They are tagging some with electronic tracking devices.
I heard two cuckoo's on 4th May, this year at a small mature broadleaf woodland in out village. The first I have heard in years, just a shame I did'nt see them!

I heard a cuckoo for the first time ever in my local park in Cheshire a few weeks back. I was stunned and stood a while to listen to it. I had no chance of seeing it as there were too many thick, dense trees, but I was spelbound all the same.
