I've been watching a pair of blue tits going to and fro, as the bring caterpillars to a nest box to feed their young. They are coming back approx every 20-30 seconds.
One of the parent birds flickers its wings a lot, before entering the nest box, while the other does not.
So would I be right in assuming the former is the female ?

Not sure, Tilly.
It also looked slightly smaller in size, when you see the pair together.

I think they flick and flitter just to let the other bird know they're there. They wait for the other bird to come out before going in themselves. I would bet that they both do it.
