I used to eat pheasant and partridge - before it became big business to breed fat, useless birds that could hardly fly - solely to flatter the ego of inadequate pillocks with expensive shotguns who want to boast about the 'bag'.

I also used to think that controlled shooting and raptor conservation could co-exist - I was wrong - the ludicrous prejudice of gamekeepers and the money-lust of estate managers meant that the raptors were all but wiped out.

The pendulum has swung, thank god - we now need to push it even further in the big birds favour.

A little knowledge is indeed dangerous.....Melv...are you familiar with Fineshade in Northants?.. I stand corrected about knowledge and education:-) I've never heard of fineshade, is it a penal colony, gness?:-)

I've been a Fineshade woods fan for fifty years.....in 1995 red kites were introduced from Spain and I've followed their progress since.....
I'm a birder who knows a little.....needs to learn more but I do know a lot about red kites and being told they're not carrion feeders or that they take other birds makes me a little cross....though not as cross as seeing one poisoned for blood sport.....

If it's not too far Fineshade's a nice day out, Melv....before the Forestry Commission ruin it completely......x

When I lived in the Yorkshire Dales, and passed through the area around Harewood House where a Red Kite Re-introduction Programme had taken place, you would see them feeding on the road kill early in the mornings. They are very lazy birds and I agree with what Gness has said. I've also seen piles of dead grouse left rotting in the fields because nobody want them. Disgusting sport.

Fineshade looks a great place, gness.
It was reported in today's paper that a red kite had been found shot in County Down, there are only 20 breeding pairs in Northern Ireland!
It was reported in the papers that red kites can be a danger to children, yet another lie coming from the shooting fraternity

Fineshade is, Melv....and if you do visit you'll find the bench I've had placed there in memory of MrG in a spot where you can sit in the shade and watch kites circling......
A danger to children?....Poppycock.....as you say...a lie and a lie to scare.....
How sick is a person who could shoot a kite.... :-(

I chucked out of the NT some years ago over their stag hunting policy on Exmoor and Dartmoor.

I forgot to mention about the Rspb wardens who filmed a gamekeeper shooting a hen harrier. This was presented in court and the magistrates found him not guilty.
Looks like as well as the police the judiciary are in the landowners pockets.
