Jenny Wren Feeding

I often see two little Jenny Wrens pottering about round the base of my greenhouse and shed, but not lately, do they hibernate? if not what do they eat and is there something I could put out to help them through the winter?

Mealworms, tiny pieces of suet, peanut and sunflower heart nibbles fed on the ground or a ground tray.

Birds don't hibernate. They either migrate to warmer climes or tough out the winter here. Wrens stay and suffer badly in cold winters. If you have them in your garden, feeding will be very helpful.

They are so tiny they are the first to suffer in the cold of winter. Fat squares and fat balls are so easy to put out. It would be lovely if you can help and you will get so much joy from watching them. Lucky you having them in your garden.

It is the commonest UK breeding bird, although it suffers declines during prolonged, severely cold winters.

I almost (accidentally) shut one in the shed the other day. I think it was searching for spiders rather than sheltering from the cold.

I see them a lot feeding on the ground beneath the bird feeders, along with robins, blackbirds, dunocks etc on the fragments of suet that falls.

They also roost together in bird boxes in very cold weather, obviously to keep warm.
