A bonus of the cold weather is I've many more birds in the garden than usual for this time of year.
Blue, great, coal and long tailed tits. Green, gold and chaffinches a plenty:-)
Very rarely does a tit appear. We have 2 squadrons of sparrows, a quarrel of starlings, 2 doves, blackbirds, the occasional wren, Piggy the prosperous-looking pigeon and his 'friend' (he sees off the crows which try to invade) and the other day a cock pheasant appeared to clear-up the seeds dropped to the ground. Had blackcaps this Summer. At times the whole view is moving around. Just bought 'premium' fat-balls for their Xmas dinners!
Had plenty of variety here too Melv, but just had a rare sight. A Sparrow Hawk came flashing in trying to take a victim as they were feeding. It failed because the feeder obviously inhibits it being able to manoeuvre, but an incredible sight. The speed it came in at was astonishing.
I've just had the same, Togo. An unsuccessful attack by am immature male. Luckily, he lurked around the garden for half an hour or so, giving great views. Magpies soon spotted him and shooed him away.
Sadly despite having loads of feed out and about we don't get that many birds about as we seem to have every cat in the area patrol our end of the street.
Magpies eating bacon bits and scraps. blackbirds ,thrushes, hedge sparrows, tits, pigeons, starlings, resident robins ,couple wrens, Jays and squirrels competing for the monkey nuts. The jackdaws have disappeared and the wood pigeons no longer come .
I`ve got 4 bird feeders up and the birds have hardly shown any interest. I have noticed a robin trying to get to the peanuts so I put out the robin feeder that was completely ignored last year. Still no interest. The only interest is from the female blackbird who is getting through the miniature crab apples.
