I'm sure many regulars would be prepared to pay a nominal annual charge- maybe £5 but we'd lose a most of those who post only occasionally and we would get no new members and I think AB would suffer and go the way of , err, a similar named site.

The vast majority of AnswerBank users do not engage in the day-to-day chit-chat that the 'regulars' do; they ask questions (on a variety of sensible topics) and receive answers.

I imagine these users would be seriously disinclined to pay anything *at all* towards the upkeep of the site.

It would depend on individual circumstances if ABers had to pay. Also, some are here all the time, others pop in and out, maybe away for weeks at a time. The fee would depend on how much Ed needs p.a. in the first place, to keep the show running - it would have to start from there, divided by the number of active members. Then what would you do - ask people to sign up before they can post, or only let them post say 10 times before they have to pay? If not, we'd never get new members - most of us have fallen into this site completely by accident.

I would hazard that all the non members would - that's around 60% of traffic. As (some of) our income is based on "impressions" (i.e. how many people see an ad) that would equate to a 60% hit in revenue.

It's only a mild irritation when I accidentally hit the ad link instead of "Submit", but the ad is easily deleted.
However, now that I realise from this thread that these ads keep the site free to use, I shall make the effort to open at least a few, and have a quick look. Others could do the same, but needn't actually read them.
