Are we to accept blatant racism on AB?
I refer not to the interesting (if a little heated) debates in news today, but to this thread.
I'm not Muslim myself, but I am still hugely offended by what's been said.
There's no racism option when it comes to reporting posts, or questions - so I plumped for "abusive".
I realise everyone's entitled to a view on here. But where is the line?
Ed - I look forward to hearing your views in a nice little pink box!

I'm going to stick to the topic here.
I fully take on board the arguements made here about allowing a free debate on racism.
I have actually changed my views in light of what has been said. I see now that it is healthy to have a debate and that it is perhaps useful for some, many or all of us to see the other side to the arguement.
As ABE has said, in light of recent events, the line has become blurred - that is true. Also I agree with Glossopswift that it probably wasn't inciting racial hatred, it was just expressing it, not trying to encourate it - fair point.
I do respect the views of others, whatever you might think. I don't like bullying and name calling and that does get my back right up. For those who think I am always agressive, please see any one of the many questions I have answered with helpful, objective and useful information.
Thank you.
IWANOWENS I think there are different sorts of venting: getting into a heated argument with another user is different from expressing anger about different racial or religious groups. You suggest doing the latter might be a worthwhile alternative to actually going out and beating people up. I agree; but I fear it may also incite some people to do just that, which is why, in times of tension, it troubles me. I'm not aware of trying to stifle debate; indeed I seem to be contributing to one right now.
As for solicitors: well, suppose you feel aggrieved about something, and you go to see one. One solicitor may say: 'You've only got a 40-60 chance of succeeding in a lawsuit, so don't bother.' Another may say: 'You've only got a 40-60 chance of success, but I'll do my damnedest to beat the odds.' Both are professional attitudes; and of course you're entitled to prefer the first.
Well, when I make it as a commercial solicitor (and I will - mainly because I am perfectly capable of behaving perfectly professionally, but I don't see why I should do that 24/7, especially when I'm out of the office and on my own time), I will be taking my instructions from the Partners about which clients I work for and when and on what types of matter. If I end up working on the legal issues surrounding your company pensions scheme, the chances are none of you would ever know that I'd been involved. You don't always choose who works to help you in this life, that's just the way it goes.
However I, like a vast majority of young graduates in this country, am simply enoying my time as a young person before I knuckle down to the 8-8 until I'm 80. If I am going to give up the daylight hours of my adult life to be sensible and professional for 55 years, I think I should be allowed to have a bit of fun and debate now!
We're actually the same person outaboutnowt. I have a split personality and I also sometimes think I'm a man and post under the name jno.
Oh yes, and if you type in the "flight number" for the first plane to hit the twin towers, change it to size 48, change it to wingdings - look what you get. http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/ChatterBank/Question129456.html
If those things are all true, then jno and I MUST be the same person!!! :-)
manilow - I AM hotheaded. I admit that freely. I was always told at school to ignore people who say nasty things (or things you disagree with) because they'll get bored and go away. But I figured that they'd go away thinking they were right and that I agreed with them. I don't want people to think I agree with things I don't. I'm losing my thread of logic here - there was one! I know I need to bend a bit - see I've been missing my pilates classes so I've become a bit up tight!! :-p :-) Thanks for your comments though, seriously, I appreciate it! :-)
I also hope you did read the whole of that "coincidence" thread - where the truth is revealed a little later on.
jno - I thought those stats sounded a little low to me. Are you SURE there were 20 in support of George? Or were you just classing them as in support of George when I tried to start a GC fan club? You see, secretly, I tihnk you were supporting ME, not George! You just can't tell anymore petal, as we blend into one! :-p :-D
