It's better to ignore a poster if you feel sure they are trying to start a cyber-scrap with you, rather than retaliate, indulge in ping-pong insult-flinging and one or both of you ending up being suspended. Nothing childish about ignoring in those circumstances. I would imagine it's what Ed would advise you to do, along with reporting said aggressor.
Of course, Ed might just say you're too sensitive for t'internet...and he may have a point.
I personally would never use an Ignore button, but then again, I'm not around as much as a lot of the regulars are. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Bednobs if there was an ignore button people might 'ignore' you then you could be talking to yourself and be asking Ed to take the button away -it works both ways. If you are wanting to ignore someone because they post tedious posts then just don't read them. If you are ignoring someone because they are always trying to pick a fight or verbally abuse you, then publicly ignore whatever they say and report it for verbal abuse. If you have not been abusive back the comment is removed if Ed is there. Its pointless reporting anything out of hours as Mods won't zap an abusive comment if one of their favorites have made it.

You have no idea if any Mods are on line if an unsuitable comment is made, and your assertion that Mods have 'favourites' is unfounded, since the majority of Mods work anonymously.
