I have been on AB since 2003/4 (judging by old posts I have made) and I have often wondered about the other long term users.

I know that there are a couple of group websites, but why don't we have actual profiles?
Nothing too complex, but just a bit about ourselves, maybe the ability to upload an image etc.
And more importantly send each other emails.

It would be nice to have the option of taking away some of the anonymity that there is between everyone?

Public profiles have been suggested before but the AB team never seem to like the idea. One problem with public profiles, of course, is that they rarely tell the truth! I've got dozens of 'profiles', all over the internet, and not one of them is remotely accurate!

Now that the 'no e-mail addresses' rule has been lifted, it's simple enough to invite another ABer to make contact, just by putting an e-mail address in a post. (I normally create a different address every time I do this. If I start getting spam to a particular address, which is only used for correspondence with one person, it's easy to switch to a different address).

I started some e-mail correspondence with another ABer last year by inviting him to contact me. He was in Colorado and about to visit the UK for the first time. I ended up meeting him at Waterloo International, so that I could give him a guided tour of Paris!

It does really spoil the effect when one finds people who DO lie on their profiles.
Whats the point in filling it in at all if you are going to lie about yourself?

It would just be nice to be able to speak to users without breaking the agreement because you started a post which is just chat.
A private message/email box would solve that... and would be very easy to do... just a secure version of posting an answer.
Chris Old Boo 'ere ius confused....if your email contact was coming to UK, why on earth did you give him a guided tour of Paris? Did he spend the entire trip wondering why every 'Brit' was walking round in berets with strings of onions round their necks?

Caladon, agreed, it would be nice, even if we only have the facility to know whether another user is male or female.
