Can we have a disabled topic. For people to share hints,tips, best holiday places, airlines etc. Was thinking mainly for wheelchair users. Thanks.

i too think its quite a specific, niche topic.
ie you coud put a question in travel about best wheelchair holidays

It's not if your a wheelchair user and want to know where, and what are the most suitable for you, from people who have been there and done it.
If your not in a wheelchair it's difficult. When i was able bodied i took no notice of steps, planes, trains etc.
A good saying. "PUT A RAMP IN FRONT OF ME AND I'M DISABLED. BUT PUT STEPS IN FRONT OF ME THEN I'M HANDICAPPED"

I can understand why you've asked this question mrbumblebee & I think it would be very useful for disabled people to be able to go to one specific topic for general help & advice.

whats up with people using the topic most appropriate to their question? it's not like disabled people can only use one section, or should be restricted to one section is it?

Nobody's saying they can't bednobs.

I was merely answering mrbumlebee's question & thought that seeing he is disabled, there might be other's who might benefit from a topic on the subject - that's all.

Well this Q A could go on for ever, you could ask for a topic on old age , but will not go there .

Like i said clevertrev, you wouldn't understand.
I think it would benefit people.
In technology section there's ELECTRONICS, COMPUTER AND INTERNET, don't these all go together. So why not have one on electronics. Or does clevertrev, and others find that to difficult.
All i'm saying is i have been in a wheelchair for many years.
I travel abroad a great deal and have useful information on say disabled holidays, without people having to pay a fortune to so called experts. Who i think is the best airline etc. Al i want to do is help others. And if that means asking for a small specific subject to be put on ab then i'm al for it.

i think it's an excellent idea, i worked (many years ago!) with disabled people,all different kinds of disabilities ranging from deaf, visionally impaired,etc,some in wheelchairs, and noticed that they all helped each other with things like mrbumblebee has said, sometimes "able-bodied" people don't realise the obstacles that disabled people have to face, (especially if you're blind,partially sighted or in a chair) and it does help to discuss it with people who have been there in the same situation,
i hope ED will take this one on board.

i completely agree with the last sentance, so in which case, why make a seperate section? We are all the same on the internet, so why single a category out as a "disabled" category? its all very well you having lots of knowlrdge to impart about certain subjects, but this is a question and answer site, so unless someone asks the question, then you wont be able to impart this info will you? there are lots of other disability sites if you feel your questions and knowledge dont fit into the categories here. Are you suggesting that if a wheelchair user had a question about ads, it should go in a disability section? And why single out wheelchair users especially? There are lots of other disabilities that might cause problems with travelling etc but are you excluding them?

I can see where you are coming from, but i cant see why the existing categories dont cover what you want really. I would rather be free to post in all the categories, and answer questions in all the categories than be confined to a disability section. Maybe if questions about access in wheelchairs would be put in "ordinary" categories it would help people like clevertrev, who according to you "wouldn't understand" to understand?

the way i see it is, if there is a topic heading, say for example " disability travel/help" then anyone who is less "able bodied" will obviously ask and answer questions on that particular topic, instead of having to explain in detail about thier disability in the "normal" travel section, thus leaving plenty of room on the "normal" travel section for the highfliers and quick on thier feet travellers!

Not wanting to appear patronising in any way, but if you type in 'disabled' or 'disabiltiy' in the search box under Body & Soul, you will find a multitude of questions that have been asked.

I still believe it would be a very useful topic & have other personal reasons to think so too - some of which are on very similar lines to Allotment's comments.

Some of the others would be for help & advice with the emotional, personal, pratical & financial issues that disabled people or carers might have.

Thank you allotment - Just waiting for the roast spuds to finish off - maybe mrbumlebee's (love the name) doing the same! I would never dream of expecting thanks & do things from the heart (hence the tongue in cheek comments), but he seemed to have completely overlooked my helpful posts! Ne'er mind!

Anyway, as you know, by working with disabled people (which is a hard working, but rewarding job), there are many issues that could be asked & answered on here.

Very easy for abled bodied people to think otherwise!

surely the search goes to prove there are already enough sections for questions though - ie people have been asking and answering questions in body and soul about disabilities, so they wernt put of fasking and answering because there wasn't a specific section. If you did have a section then perhaps able bodieid people wouldnt go in there, in which case they will never understand will they? Perhaps some of the hints and tips might be useful to all sorts of people who might otherwise not go in a disability section, not being disabled, but if they go in the other categories then they see them
