Why is the quality of spelling and grammar so dreadful on Answerbank? It appears that 90 percent of users are illiterate

Probably for the same reason people put questions in the wrong sections

I used to be pedantic but have now narrowed that down by excessively subtle reasoning.

Harsh! Look for the content, not the style or accuracy. We are lucky if we have command of spelling, grammar and syntax. Some questioners even omit to put a full stop (or period) at the end of their sentences. How do you plead, phl666?

Fair comment lats........but in Britain are educational standards not in permanent decline?  Ask any prospective employer their opinion of school-leavers literacy levels.

Our youngsters are being taught foreign languages before they have a decent grasp of their own, and levels of numeracy are also bordering on the pathetic.

What happened to the `Education, Education, Education` campaign by the so-called `New Labour` government?

Also, if you type in 'Spelling' on 'Category Search' you will see other suggestions that have been made.

We shouldn't discourage anybody from writing because their spelling or grammar is poor.  We are not here to correct others' abilities in communication.  The fact that people communicate at all on here and can express themselves is great. 

Most of us are very literate.  Few have problems.  Lets make them feel at home.  The more they read and write on here the better chance they have of improving their skills.

 

I am glad I had a thorough grounding in reading and writing.  Some of these people are not as lucky, or have other problems.

I agree FP - Text speak should only be used in the limited amount of space provided on a mobile phone. Other than that it really is a lazy way of communicating!
