have you any books you picked up, put down, then thought this is rubbish, not working, or can't get into.
I have tried with a number of books, one was Gullivers Travels, but somehow i don't actually like it, not sure why...

Question Author
though i have to say that i started and finished The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins in record time, superb read..

but anything you didn't like... couldn't finish
Life of Pi
The Lovely Bones

both of which were given to me. I can't buy a book if I don't like the style of writing, or if the heroine is called Tripsy or Tristram. I rarely read chick-lit except on holiday.
Question Author
i know any number of people who have tried reading War and Peace and simply given up the ghost, same for Ulysses...
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I just found it tedious.
I always feel compelled to finish a book even if it is complete tosh, although i usually just scan read if this is the case, I am currently reading a Harlen Coben which I wish I hadn't started..
anything by Thomas Hardy
A while ago I decided it was time I read a Russian classic, so chose Crime and Punishment. WHAT a boring read. I did however, persevere with it, but don't think I'll bother with another.
Girl with the dragon tattoo for me as well - and I really tried (mostly because of the hype). Tedious is the perfect word for it.
..............and the last Edna OBrien book. I can't remember the title but I know I was very disappointed.
Oo Humber, he's my favourite author.
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, got about halfway through.
The Celestine Prophecy. A friend recommended it and I started reading but lost intereast halfway through.
King of torts by Jon Grisham - I went through a phase of being gifted Grisham books and I'm not sure I got through any of them. why would combining banking, legislation and some buttoned up office workers be considered a thrilling tale.
^^ horseshoes, look away now

and Charles Dickens

Oo no Humber, can't bear to read Dickens, although I quite enjoy the film versions, especially the old version of David Copperfield.
takes a deep breath[i

and Emily Bronte and Jane Austen

[i]there, I said it]
The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell. A vast time.
Good, and I will go back to it, but the subject matter is so horrific (memoirs of an SS Nazi interrogator ) that I can only bear it in small doses.
Tome, not time.
