Which are yours ... & why? Do they have sentimental attachment? Are they rare?

Although I'm female, I much prefer male authors eg any books by Ian McEwan, William Boyd(especially "Any Human Heart") and on a lighter note Roddy Doyle books.

Impossible to pick one but after seeing all the recommended ones on here, I realise that there are too many good books around and not enough time to read them! Am hooked on Lee Child thrillers at the moment (Jack Reacher ones)

About 5 years ago The Guardian published a list of '1000 novels to read before you die selected by a panel. My son is gallantly trying to work his way through it but I think I've left it too late to start, even though I'm quite a fast reader. Another vote for "Skallagrigg". One of the few books that has moved me to tears and one of the few books that has changed my outlook on life.

Catcher in the Rye - I love the way he (Holden Caulfield) labels people as "phoney" with typical teenage angst. And the episode where one of his teachers makes a pass at him is hilarious. So is his relationship with his room-mate Stradlater. And who could fail to be enchanted by his little sister.

For as long as i can recall, i've always loved books. Like many of you on here, i read the usual books as a child, Famous Five and Secret Seven spring immediately to mind, but the one which really captured my young imagination was The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Fascinated by this 'other world' i then read The Lord Of The Rings, the 'Alice' books and any other 'fantasy' novels i could get my hands on. No surprise, then, that my favourite author nowadays is Stephen King - particular his 7 book Dark Tower series which are my prized possessions. (I know he has added another book to the collection, The Wind Through the Keyhole and i have yet to read it. I keep putting it off, however, as it is set between books 4 & 5 and as such, doesn't move the story forward.)
