Help Trying To Find A Book...

read this book yonks ago but can't remember the author or title. it's about 2 girls who meet at boarding school and their families. The main character is sent to boarding school when her mother and younger sister rejoin their father in Singapore (I think) and her friend belongs to a very posh family, one brother and one sister who live in a beautiful house in Cornwall/Devon. She has an aunt who dies in a car crash (and leaves her quite well off). She falls in love with the posh friend's brother (not good) and he dies during the war. Her parents die during the war but she is eventually reconciled with her younger sister who was rescued from drowning by an Australian nurse from her refugee ship.......can anyone help?
