do you recognise this teenage/childrens book plot

I have a vague memory of reading a book in the 1960s about a captured bear that escapes to an island from a sinking ship and proceeds to kill its captors, while protecting a young boy who has befriended it.
Can anyone remember such a book and its title

Ok, just had time for another look, "Stranded on Terror Island" by Lee Roddy, is this the one???

Thanks again Candled, I had seen this one myself and the plot is spot on, but unfortunately it wasn't written until 1996 and the book I'm after was at the latest from the 1960s.
