Wow, I wasn't expecting an answer. Thanks for that - it doesn't ring any bells however, but it might be the one. I don't remember any names, although I do have a very vague feeling the guy was called Uncle Merry, but may be muddling it with some other long-forgotten memory. Your response much appreciated, I wish I could remember more :(

Well, I expect it was a useful way of putting facts across painlessly and probably used by many authors of the time. Will have another think. Did you have the 'Romany' books? Similar in a way.
