christmas poem
24 Answers
Am looking for a Nativity poem for children, which includes the stable animals, angels, shepherds and kings. Any suggestions please? I have looked at the lyrics of well-known carols.

I love John Betjeman's Advent but there are none of the usual Christmas things in it, but there is a real feeling of Christmas, that amidst all the fuss and tinsel something wonderful happened

Excuse me sir
Have you room in your inn
My wifes having a baby
may we come in
Sorry my friend
I'm full every bed
I can offer you space
In my stable instead
The innkeepers wife
gave them fresh scented hay
And left them warm blankets
In the place they would stay
The ox and the milk cow
Made room in the stall
And the chickens and ducks
Made not one single call
In the peace and the quiet
The christ child was born
And though twas a stable
Was not cold and forlorn
The glow from the child
Laying in mary's embrace
Brought peace and love
in an ordinary place
Out on the hillside
Not far from the town
A group of tired shepherds
Had just settled down
The voices of angels
Woke them from sleep
Gave them a message
That just wouldn't keep
Go back to the town now
For this you must see
A magical happening
Great as can be
born in a stable
Sleeping in straw
The sun of god waits
Go praise and adore
The shepherds got up then
And walked down the hill
it was cold it was clear
It was wonderfully still
There on the outskirts
Lit up by a star
They found a place
Where the new family were
from far in the distance
Three wise men did come
Carrying gifts
For a great one was born
They went to the king
And asked for to see
But Herod said no
There is no king but me
So they looked up high
And saw the bright star
Hung over the stable
And they said Ah ha
We are in the wrong place
And this person of worth
Has been born in a place
That's the humblest on earth
So reverent and humble
They entered the byre
Sat mary and Joseph
And the new born messiah
Awestruck they gave him
Three special things
Frankincense, gold and myrrh
Such value they bring
And on bended knees
They in wonder did gaze
At the precious baby with a halo of rays
The light of the world
in a manger of hay
A child who in future
to whom many would pray
But there in that table
Just a vulnerably child
Born to ordinary parents
Humble and mild
Have you room in your inn
My wifes having a baby
may we come in
Sorry my friend
