Having sorted Mr BM's birthday present from me (see technology). I now need to sort Mr BM's present from his son.

At school and college he loved art and was quite good. He has expressed a wish to take up painting again (oils).

What should I buy to give him everything he needs to make a start?

Some art shops run art courses.
My wife's a semi-pro artist

The thing about oils is that they're slow drying you need quite a lot of space to leave things out to work on them.

Consequently she tends to work in acryllic rather than oils (still makes a mess of all her art stuff everywhere :c(

Depending on what you want to spend something like this might be good

Mixture of mediums so if oils don't work out there's acryllics and water colour too.

Hope you've a big house - artists have a habit of turning it into a studio!

depending on what you
pick up a couple of appropriately sized canvasses at any art shop and some gesso for priming the canvas

there is someone on here who is a very good artist, but I cant remember his name, he posted some of his drawings on here a couple of times, maybe someone will remember the name of the poster and he could give you some advice.

Thank you all - particularly Jake, those links look quite good. Acrylics sound like an idea too.

We do have the room (in fact one of the spare rooms would be ideal, and at least then it probably wouldn't get used as a general dumping ground).
If you have a Range shop near you, they have an excellent selection of painting stuff at reasonable prices.
Barmaid aren't you in London? If so, which part - or where are you before I respond.
Acrylics are very good, Barmaid......more flexible and can behave like an oil or a watercolour.....
A set of oil pastels and a good block of paper is also a handy gift - and if they are at all computer inclined, a copy of Revelation Natural Art is really brill

BM is not in London.
so where then, ummmm? in connection with the thread - thanks.
I was just letting you know she doesn't live in London. I'm sure she'll tell you where she lives when she returns to the thread.
Oh - you're in London?

Go to Cass art - just round the corner from the National in Trafalgar square

Huge Art shop really cheap

My wife would empty the place if she could!
I would agree with DT acrylics are probably best to start with and can give you the feel of watercolour and oils depending on how you use them. you might want to take a look here http://www.saa.co.uk/
I think BM lives in Peterborough.
it doesn't sound as if he's necessarily a beginner, though.
