Not a so-called "reader"...

I am not an avid reader...but I have a job now that presents me with quite a bit of free time...what book would you all say I absolutely should read?? I usually like Fiction and I need something that will keep me entertained, but isn't a hard read....

PS: The only books I have ever read all the way through and loved were the Chronicles of Narnia by T.S. Lewis.

Hi HAnn,  For easy reading - Maeve Binchy (she's Irish but I think is known in the states), Sidney Sheldon, Dan Brown. Gone with the Wind is a good book, A town like Alice also

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. Can't remember all the titles in the series but first one is One for Sorrow (I'm sure), next is two for ?joy, three to get ready etc. V V funny. Set in USA

You should definetely try Harry Potter then! Also if you liked the Narnia novels(by the way C.S.Lewis lived a few miles down the road from where we live,just outside Belfast,and there is now a commemorative statue)you would probably enjoy the Terry Brooks,Magic Kingdom novels.

if you want something a bit "heavier" you might try Robert Jordan or of course Tolkien. For interest, take a look at CS Lewis' other books, there are the Screwtape letters and also the Silent Planet series

Philip Pullman - the Northern Lights Trilogy. AMAZING (like Harry Potter in that its fantasy/magic for kids etc but actually well-written and good!)

I, too, am not a natural born reader, but I I've thoroughly enjoyed all the Harry Potter books. And Artemis Fowl is also excellent.

Any Dan Brown .. Deception Point is the best .. but of course Angels and Demons and Da Vinci code are cracking reads  .. there is one more .. but the title slips my mind .. read it .. and it was alright as well.

I loved Five People you Meet in Heaven, and also the 1st Ladies Detective Agency is very easy to get into

Try "The Eternal Champion " series of books by Michael Moorcock,there,s quite a  few of them ,and after you,ve read the first you,ll be hooked

OK, looks like I've got a lot of options then....Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!! I am going to narrow it down to one or two and go get them sometime soon...hopefully I'll be able to finish them at work and help the time go by....   ;0)

You have got to read a book called Shantaram by Gregory Roberts (I think David is his middle name). But don't be put off because it's over 900 pages long - it's a fascinating true story about a guy who escapes from prison in Australia, and ends up in India, and it's the story of what he did there (started a free health clinic, fought with the rebels in Afghanistan amongst other things) and the people he meets and befriends,  and how he comes to terms with it all.  I could have read it all in one sitting and I will definitely read it again.

Just had to say lily that "The lovely bones was one of the most moving stories I have read. Cried in quite a few places ;-(
