Looks like apples to me
They are fruit. they look like apples, but they may not be, Matisse was big on fruit being in his painting - you should look at some of his other stuff. flowers, curvy women, the odd bit of furniture, abstract snail... and fruit.  they may look like apples, but I think they may be peaches. peaches feature in some of his other works in a more realistic manner... hope this helps

Thanks!!

they could be rabbits lying back in beanbags, but probably aren't.

estie,Hi there,

They could be apples, but then apples(generally) are depicted with only one stalk.I suppose they could be tomatoes,or some other kind of Mediterreanean vegetable?

Question Author

he he... I like the rabbit idea ;-)

I originally thought tomatoes too, because of their shape, but they dont have stalks like that...

Either way, I think it's a really cool painting :-)

The first two objects are ducklings, the second two are winged insects.
Question Author

Wow... flying insects the size of ducklings?!

That would make it a scary painting :-(

I think prefer them as peaches or apples!

i think you'll find they are in fact

KIDNEYDUCKS

see shape and obvious beak.

all the urinary benefits and donation potential of a kidney;

all the aquatic grace and airborne power of a duck...

not to mention the fantastic gastronomic possibilities of

a) kidneys per se

b) ducks

c) ducks' kidneys

d) kidneys (in this case) the size of ducks - this can be a help both in medical ways (if indeed you are the owner of such impressive organs (though the beak issue may need to be addressed), and have a lot of urine to process...) and culinarily, (if you have a large party for which to make exotic starters with these mallardic megaliths from the duck butcher.

They could be splashes of wine from the Amphora that bird has on her bonce.
