pretty much original, but he was working at the same time as the surrealists and Dadaists, who also put humour and dissonance into their work, and picking up the fractured modernism that gathered pace after the first world war. I suppose you could trace some of his approach back as far as Arcimboldo, the one who painted heads that turn out on closer inspection to be little cabbages and so on - they don't look like Magrittes, but they share an interest in subverting traditional means of representation.

Ceci n'est pas un post.

Hi Marge B,

No it all came out of his head,or apple, cloud etc, depending on how you look at it! LOL

If you go to this link, you can see his(and his wife, under her maiden name!) grave;as you will see didn't die until 1967.I think a lot of people think he was much earlier than that?

BTW Now I am here, how did you enjoy the Hammershoi programme  with Michael Palin? I thought he did it very well,he was informative&humourous & enlightening, without being too intrusive.

Only problem is,now I want to go to Denmark and see some more of his paintings!

the point about ceci n'est pas une pipe is that it isn't une pipe, it's a picture of une pipe.
