Anyone else read it? Based on a true story, the result of the author’s interviews with the main character. Poorly constructed and such a wasted opportunity for a writer. A huge disappointment.

I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. But I am a sucker for a love story with a happy ending.

I've read it twice, I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed it. It brought me to tears, told my father in law who also likes reading, that EVERYONE should read it, as the story is magnificently portrayed in this novel, and gives a perfect insight into the atrocities that occured during the war.

I don't think that any book that has ever been written is one that EVERYBODY should read.

My opinion woof, it was a great education to me, and I believe that it was that good I would say to anyone to give it a try, that most people should dig into these types of stories from time to time.

This isn't ChatterBank - people are allowed to have a serious discussion. FWIW, I agree with Naomi. I thought the book extremely poorly written. It purports to be an historical novel but there is absolutely no drama whatsoever to the extent where it is little more than a trite documentary which is an insult to its subject matter. To quote Stephen Fry's assessment of The Da Vinci Code, this is *** gravy of the first order.

The book has been compared to Schindler’s List and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas but I’ve no idea why. The author positively skimmed across much that required greater detail and the book failed dismally to portray an accurate reflection of the suffering and cruelty of Auschwitz. Childlike in its narrative and in its construction, an insult to
the victims of the holocaust - in my opinion. The lady should stick to writing romance - but I wouldn’t read her work again under any circumstances. Serious works aren’t her forte - and neither is history.

FrillyPancake, if you like easy to read books and would like more of a flavour of this period of history I can highly recommend The Boy in Striped Pyjamas. No romance to be found in it though.

heavily edited manuscripts - well Go set a watchman the delayed sequel to Mockingbird, was so heavily needing editing that....
they went back to Mockingbird and found around 50% been revised. - to the extent they joked it should be by Harper Lee and Miss X jt

I liked the Pianist
altho bits ( from my father's acct as a POW - VERY different) were obviously true and other bits were obviously untrue

and found the jewish critics held the same opinion about the same bits ....

I know naomi, but so was The Girl on the Train and The Da Vinci Code and I didn't enjoy them at all.
