New dictionary. Help!

I recently went into Waterstones to buy a new dictionary and came out with 'The Once and Future King'. The choice was too confusing! My family would love one that gives the origin of words if possible, and not over large. I would be truly grateful of any help and advice.

I was given the Concise Oxford for winterval last year, and I can't fault it.
