I Hate Musicals

I'm overstating my feelings, but I do find them pretty awful. I don't understand the appeal of caterwauling cats, and 'saucy Jacks', and phantoms of the opera; all got laboured plots and casts of people who can't sing, dance or act very well.

Well, not everything is for everyone. I love me a good musical. Rocky Horror Show, Little Shop Of Horrors, Avenue Q, Rent, Hamilton... Unapologetically love them.

I don’t like them very much either. The thought of going to the theatre and listening to the likes of Miss Saigon, (which was awful, by the way), or Les Mis, feels me with dread. Though I am partial to Oliver, and Joseph’s Technicoloured Dreamcoat, but I think that’s nostalgia from when I was a kid

Don't like modern musicals but the 40s-60s was the golden age. Carousel, Oklahoma, Guys & Dolls. Etc.

Love musicals and can't wait for theatres to open again (if they ever do). I have never, in all my many visits to the theatre, encountered bad singing, dancing or acting. Apart from Miss Saigon which I just didn't like, I have always come away with a big smile on my face after a great show and whoever I have gone with has felt the same and we discuss it all on the way home! I've only seen Jersey Boys once and I really hope I can see it again one day, it was excellent.

For laboured plots, forget about musicals and take a look at opera!

I adore musicals.
The talent that can turn the words of T.S.Eliot into a musical. Those who can create a fantastic set and a chandelier that doesn't decapitate the audience.
The actors who can perform on roller skates.
The determination of youngsters at Stage School hoping to be chosen for a chorus as a first step to fame.
The sound and lighting engineers who can make you believe there really is a helicopter landing on stage.

Most importantly showcasing the talents of a wardrobe mistress. Costuming shows like 42nd Street and Brigadoon. (that's because measuring up a dozen or so fit men for kilts is so good).

The world would be much poorer without musicals except for The Sound of Music..... :-)

Starlight Express was FABULOUS.

When Dave suggested moving to the wild west of Ireland I knew there would be only two things I would miss.
One was being so close the the venues for so many musicals.

And no.....his attempts at singing for me are no substitute. :-(

You got me there, Buen. It's not just what I said about singing, dancing and acting, it's just that there is a sort of straining of reality, there is so much suspension of belief required to swallow the whole thing that I can't actually swallow it. On the other hand, some old musicals and operas do thrill me and do get me to suspend disbelief - maybe they are cleverer and more akin to art rather than churned-out pabulum.

I can't stand them either, I think it was Sweeny Todd I was looking forward to thinking this'll be good, then all of a sudden they broke out into a song and dance number... What the *&^%$! is this!!! I turned it over to watch some naff adverts.

West side story is the one for me. The rest pale into insignificance.

I enjoyed Flowers for Mrs Harris, the singing was of a high standard (especially the lead), and the acting first class (there wasn't any dancing). The plot wasn't laboured, a bit sentimental perhaps but an unexpected twist at the end.
