The windows were located in the attic. Some of these windows were a door to starlight. Secrets were hidden behind iron bars on the floor below. The air that filtered through the iron bars brought life to this place. The kitchen was on the lower floor. It was divided into three parts, its most precious treasure was in the center. To which work do these clues belong?

Do you think it's Madame Bovary Sevo? Over the weekend I pasted your quote into google translate for French and then searched for them on google. It came up with lots of books that had some of those words - Hugo, Loti etc - but none that matched it anywhere near the majority.

Maybe do a search on answerbank. I'm sure it's been asked before a few weeks ago

Ah sorry: .maybe it was yours I saw on 7th march

It sort of rings a bell - but not a strong one and I'm trying to home in on it.,.. it was about a woman on her own in WW2 who was left a  giant truffle.....sorry.  I'll keep thinking.

I don't know but a quick google tells me that quite a few different people are asking the same question.

Is it for a quiz?

There is a French use of a German phrase for a roof window - a 'Wasistdas' (what is that?)

I can't remember its origin at this moment. Some German of importance travelling in France pointed to a roof light & said "Was ist das?" They didn't have a specific name & so henceforth  that it what it has been called.

Not Alain Fournier

Ah well, I give up!

OK if you have an app that straightaway tells you who it's not then one route might be to enter all the well known French authors trial by error. Have you tried Emil Zola?
