of course they did! the witch tried to fatten up the two of them and put them in a pot ready for cooking, but then their dad came back for them and pushed the witch into the oven where she died and they all escaped to live happily ever after!
no the dad did,nt come back, the boy pushed the witch into the oven, they then found their way home, the stepmother had died so the dad was overjoyed to see them and they lived happily ever after. remember it was the stepmom who wanted rid of them cos she did'nt want to share the measly scraps of food they thay had, beats me why dad just did,nt get off his backside and get a job then he could buy food from tesco.
fair enough!! if you see the question befor this one on jack and the beanstalk, i have now come to the conclusion my mum made up her own fairy tails, i dont remember any of that!!! i will have to go out and buy them all and learn the actuall stories befor i attempt my own family!! haha!!

Southportram, your doing better than me, I had Hansel and Gretal starving themselves in a cage they had been put in by the witch, they got so skinny they could escape throught the bars..... god knows what my mum was told me!!

Can't quite figure out the moral behind it either!! They normally come with one!

Of course JoCannon could simply read a book of fairy stories for herself...

I could Quizmonkey, but i'm at work and we were discussing the endings to storytales, and I thought someone on here will know the answer quite quickly.

You will be pleased to know i'm currently ploughing through Jack & the Beanstalk that Mycatis posted me a link to, so I will now be much better informed.

i did a module in Uni about classic fairytales - some of them would stop you sleeping at night. Theres at east 7 different versions of fairytales - ones from earl on have different names to what we know them as know. Blue Beard was the scariest one i ever read!! Fairy tales weret invented specifically for children when they first appeared.

In the book I had (Little Golden Books), Hansel was put in the cage to fatten up, and Gretel was put to work as scullery maid. She's the one who pushed the witch into the oven, then she let her brother out. And this was back before stories were recast with female heroines.

In my family, we still occasionally quote the witch in her cackly creaky voice: "Puyt your head in the oven, Gretel, and see if it's hot enough."
