I'd like to buy an Asterix book for my 12 year old nephew who goes to Asterix Park every year, but I don't know which one to get. Is Asterix the Gaul the best being the first? Hope someone can help me out.

My favourite is Astrix chez les Bretons (Asterix in Britain) which is good if you want to understand the stereotypical views the French have about the British.
I don't think it really matters, my son reads Asterix in any order, as I buy them. Especially if he goes to Asterix Park he will know the general story and the characters.

Thanks to you both. The thing is he's been going to Asterix Park for the last 4 years (prefers it to Disneyland as there's more water!) but I've only recently realised he didn't know that Asterix was a character in a book. I was hoping somebody could tell me what they think would be the best one for a 12 year old to start off with. Asterix chez les Bretons is really good but would a 12 year old really appreciate (and understand) the humour?
yes - fine for 12 year olds and even younger; they may not get all the jokes but they'll understand enough.
I discovered Asterix on a school exchange visit before they were even translated over here, and probably learnt more useful French from the books than from school lessons... sont fous, ces Bretons!!
Definitely start with Ast the Gaul - then any in any order!
