1975 actually, when it won the Whitbread award. I must say I was slightly disappointed by it, having read 'Laidlaw' first and expecting another maverick detective like a mixture of Taggart and Rebus (but preceding both). Since then there have been two more Laidlaw novels and one (The Kiln) linking the two characters.
