I can't remember the exact details, but Sebastian Horsley, artist and columnist of the Erotic Review, went to the Philippines last year to take part in an annual religious event where someone is actually crucified. Horsley is the first westerner to have had the dubious honour of being nailed to the cross there. His motives appear to have been to confront the pain and plain curiosity as well as a certain performance artistic element to it. Another British artist, Sarah Lucas - her exhibition 'Cake' is currently running in Spitalfields at an undisclosed location - was to have videoed it, but she fainted. Rumours that there is in fact a video of the crucifixion have been heard, however.
