Can anybody give me a synopsis of Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackery? I was reading a cast line up for the film but since I have not read the book (though might if it sounds good) I don't know where all the names fall in with the story. Help Anyone?

Jennifer, the heroin, is in love with Herbert the village blacksmith, but since he is an Arkwright and she is a tall girl they are forbidden to marry. Now unknown to Jennifer her mother, who is the village blacksmith's striker, is also in love with him. She was a Holroyd before she was married, but no one holds it against her. Jennifers father, who is head ferret stranglers for Sir Normanby Willington-Chough, up at the big house, is also in love with Lady Willington-Chough in addition to being in love with the village blacksmith and the village blacksmiths wife Sidney. It all comes to a head when Sidney, the blacksmiths wife, runs off with the postman from the next village. ..But to tell you more might spoil it for you. I'll just say that Tom and Doris get all tied up with a man selling part time magic potions and Greta finally come up with the method for making bayonet flavoured string without suet. All very racey stuff.
