Can someone suggest an opera that would have been popular around the early 1870's? Not neccessarily ones which premiered around that period but just operas that would have been performed. I'm not particularly bothered by the country that they were performed in either.

One of the more outstanding ones would be "The Barber of Seville" by Rossini.
Tchaikovskys The Oprichnik was first produced in St. Petersburg on 12 April 1874 at the Mariinskii Theatre... It was quite popular, especially when moved from St. Petersburg and Moscow to the provincial stages. The author was never completly satisfied with the results, however...
1871 saw the first production and performance of Verdi's Aida to celebrate the opening of the Suez canal.

Verdi was already by that time the hit composer of the day, so all his earlier works (e.g. Traviata, Trovatore, Rigoletto) would have been favourites.

Wagner was also making a big impression for those who preferred the German repertoire. In the early 1870s the Bayeuth Festival Opera House was already under construction, and again, his earlier works (e.g. Tannhauser, Lohengrin) would have been well known.
yeah
remember that although AIda was commissioned for the opining of the Suez Canal, it wasnt ready

and on the opening, The Opera in Cairo put on something else - building now pulled down
