i am trying to find a book about a soldier who is going to be executed for desertion in 24 hours, the story is him trying to stay awake so he can spent every last moment can anyone help?

It sounds kinda like "A Very Long Engagement" by Sebastien Japrisot (a translation from French) ... but I'm not sure
