For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Not exactly a good answer, for which I apologise, but I would point you to the Introduction to Shakespeares Complete Works edited by Peter Alexander (now accepted to be the standard modern edition). In his Intro Alexander discusses the editing and printing of both the First Folio and subsequent Quartos. This should be easily available in most complete works currently on sale.
According to he British Libraries website (www.bl.uk/treasures/shakespeare)printing was regulated by ecclesaistical authorities and the Stationers Company. Relatively few plays got into print and didn't sell in large numbers, so weren't profitable. With no copyright law, the publisher of the play had ther rights to the play, not the author
