Is there a word/name for this syndrome? I understand it exists as a learning difficulty of some kind. A friend of mine once had it, although it wasn't all the time i think

Hi barcelonic

It's a symptom of Dyslexia. There a many degrees of Dyslexia so it sounds as if your friend might have a mild case.
Dyslexia is only one of the many causes of left /right confusion.

If that is the only problem it is not dyslexia and many people suffer from left/right confusion (sometimes called left/right challenge)

It is in the same sphere as spatial awarenes - particularly noticeable in driving. People with poor spatial awareness go far too wide overtaking, or believe they can't get through a gap which is big enough for the largest truck.

Nice article here:

I am dyslexic and I cant tell my left from my right I had to do all my driving lessond with a big pink flower ring on my right hand so I knew which was which lol!!!
Well done pinkbunny! Hope you've got used to it now??!
Yeah I passed my driving test five years ago and as I have got older it has gotten easier a little common sense applied to life is always helpful, something I lacked when I was younger lol!!!
But no the pink flower ring has been in my jewelery box ever since!!
Hi, I'm not remotely dyslexic. However, I would be interested to find out if there is a word from not knowing L from R. 'cos I don't. It's difficult to describe. I can distinguish, but it's with seconds thought, not automatic. It was difficult to learn to drive 'cos at a junction I might "feel" R was L & vice versa. It's as if my brain has no interest in knowing the difference. I can point my right hand(just had to look!!!) and shout "to the left ".Obviously I'm rubbish as a navigator. I think there's loads out there like me.
I 'm the same as you sarahmitz. If I have a few seconds to think about it its fine but if i say which direction on the spur of the moment i get confused lol I too have to look at my hands to help.
I can do left/right (I write with my right hand......) but have a devil of a time getting east/west the correct way around... like Sarah, I can do it if I think about it for a second or two but it's not totally automatic like left/right or north/south is to me .....
