sonnets have 14 lines and are wriiten in iambic pentamiter
a sonnet will contain 14 lines, usually with a rhyming pattern of A,B,A,B,C,D,C,D,E,F,E,F,G,G.
14 lines of iambic pentameter is right - however, the rhyme pattern determines what type of sonnet it is. Jenky has desribed an English (Shakespearean) sonnet, but there are other types, eg Italian, Spenserian etc, all explained here: http://www.sonnets.org/basicforms.htm
