Suggest an autobiography to read, please

I have just re-read the autobiography of my favourite author.

Slide Rule, by Nevil Shute.

It has reminded me how much I enjoy a good autobiogaraphy.

Could you suggest any more that I might enjoy?

I exclude anyone who has to get a ghost writer to do it for them

No...They actually sent me two copies. I've ended up with 9 books and I ordered 4. Ginger started it and was giggling but I think he's forgotten about it now.

Kitty Kelley writes good autobiographies of famous people, like Frank Sinatra (very good) and Nancy Reagan.

Her book on Frank enraged him so much, he ordered, supposedly a hit on her. He also offered her money to drop the book!

Yes I will include biographies, but I won't accept recent 'celebrities' who are just famous for being in Heat magazine or being paid silly money to kick a ball around a field.

Peter Kay's "The sound of laughter" - sheer fun, easy to read andit contains some surprises.

Clive James series of autobiographies are great - starting with Unreliable Memoirs which covers his childhood in Australia, then there's Falling Towards England, May Week Was In June and North Face of Soho. I'm just about to start the just released Blaze of Obscurity which covers his 20 years in TV, but I thoroughly enjoyed the others - even if he's not the most likeable character sometimes.

What type of bios do you like?
The Nazi Officer's Wife by Edith Hahn Beer.
The Knock At The Door by Mary Ahnert Touryan.
You could also look at Xinran's books which are short interviews with ordinary Chinese people who've lived through the revolution etc.

I have just started D-Day+1 by Frank 'Dutch' Holland, about his survival crashing in occupied France.

I have previously read Clive James and David Niven, and enjoyed them.

I read a biography about Steven Spielberg which didn't paint him in a good light - haven't enjoyed a film of his since.
