Thanks bednobs. It's easy to look up words that begin a certain way but it's ahrd to find words that end in certain letters, if you don't already know them.

. . . . I've just looked it up [raises one eyebrow, lowers the other] . . . .
and even that is oftens spelt must, probably because sth is hard to pronounce.

How do you pronounce it?
like it looks, but it's not easy to move your tongue around to produce a th sound straight after an s. So it usually comes out the same as must.

Do you have to try and bring your tongue up to your front teeth then straight back down? It just sounds like I have a lisp when I try.
actually, no, I'm wrong, the dictionary says it is just pronounced must. I've heard Indian people say it more like musth, but perhaps that was just their accent.
I'm amazed that there are so few words in the English language beginning MAF...........

I can only think of mafia, ratter.
And mafia is Italian. The only English words are maffick and maffled.
