The men can answer if they wish but ladies, how old were you? And how much did you wear? The practice is thousands of years old, and cross-cultural, but who are you doing it for ? A straw poll of my female family gets the unenlightening answer " I do it for me; I feel better".

About 14 I'd say but that would have been just mascara and lippy, I don't wear much now unless I'm going out. I preferred to dye my hair every other week.
17
I have been dyeing my own hair from I was 14. I had long hair and I used to buy one shilling of peroxide and got a big massive tooth brush and dipped the brush into the peroxide and slid it down my hair resulting in blonde streaks.
To answer your question, it's for me and to a lesser extent my OH, I like to look nice for him when we go out.
I can't remember the exact age. Somewhere in my teens. I do remember wearing bright blue mascara and drawing on a socket line and eyelashes underneath the eye, to emulate Twiggy.
About 11 when I first tried a bit of eyeshadow, but 14 when I started wearing it 'properly'.

LOL...LOL....didn't the fact that you were a size 24 dress and 40CCC bra , give the game away?
My first school play, I'd have been about 11 ? They didn't say they were going to make us up until the night we were 'live' when we were committed ! Big shock. Especially as we had to walk home with it afterwards. Of course, never looked back since ;-)
Sqad, you know me so well.♥
;-)
Mascara at about 12, played around with eyeliner after that but it wasn't something I could master without doing an accidental Kiss imitation. Never could get on with lipstick. In working life I'd make an effort with foundation (to cover zits), eyeshadow and mascara. I don't bother at all now as nobody's likely to look.
I used to wear false eyelashes sometimes. 2 stories - once I was in John Lewis ladies applying false eyelashes. A lady said, I want to know how to do that can I watch. Then a few other ladies also watched. Suddenly I was giving a How to Apply Eyelashes Masterclass!
Another time I got home from a date. Looked in mirror. Only one side eyelashes still there. Looked stupid. Wondered how long that evening it had been like that. :o(
Times gone by I wouldn't open door without full slap !...bit of mascara, eye liner and lip gloss does the job now...have been blessed with mum's good skin so no need for cover up foundations....but have rigorous skin care regime...
Same as Prudie, about 13/14 virtually colourless lipstick or very pale pink then.
Always wear it, it brightens up my face and just makes me feel better. Each to their own.
Mr YS says 'You look lovely without makeup' (creep!!) but when I haven't got any on he says 'Are you OK? You look pale and tired' (that means old!)
used to have to hide it from my mother that stick panstick and I was 15 . And it has just brought to my mind I bought a pair of high heeled shoes and she would have gone ballistic if she knew so I hid them behind the dustbin . Stupid thing to do as when the bins were emptied they were gone .This was way back in the early 50's.
Forgot to say...about 13 ...miners white pearl lippie...blue eyeshadow , pink blusher ! Lovlee ?
jeff chandler only used a light dusting of pressed powder and lipstick.

Gosh, I remember Pan Stick!

I hardly wear any now apart from moisturiser - I won't go out without lipstick thought, otherwise I look washed out.
I was 32 and attending a fancy dress New Years Eve party as the Incredible Hulk. My lasting memory is trying to get the greasepaint off my face, arms and chest with Swarfega, in a freezing garage, at 02.30 in the morning. Brrrrrr.
I was sixteen. Pan stick, lippy mascara and rouge.
Always applied extra carefully when going to the pictures to see Jeff Chandler.
